How to get an account for the HIVE?

Every work group can apply for an account on the HIVE. Please ask your PI or a responsible person in your lab if you already have an account. If you do not have an account yet, please ask your PI or the official contact person of the Imaging Network to contact the Imaging Network. We will then create an account for you.

How do I get access to the HIVE?

First you need an account on the HIVE. Please see "How to get an account for the HIVE?"
To connect to the HIVE you can use the remote desktop connection. This is also possible from home via the university VPN connection.
Start the Remote Desktop Control (Ger.: Remotedesktopverbindung) and connect to following IP-Address and press Connect:
IP: 10.15.127.4

Please type in the following into the empty fields:
User name: <Account_Name>
Password: <Account-Password>

It might be necessary to activate the Use a different account option.
The login data (account name and password) were provided by the Imaging Network to a responsible person.

How do I get access to my data?

1. Use the network share of the WWU-Cloud

The following procedure describes the mounting process for the HIVE:

We recommend to use a network share of the WWU-Cloud, as the HIVE has a high speed connection to it. Please find more information about the WWU-Cloud and network shares here.
To connect to the network share, please open the windows explorer on the HIVE, go to This PC and use Map Network Drive from the menu at the top. Type in the following path:
\\wwu.de\ddfs\Cloud\wwu1\<Project_Name>\<Share-Name>

MIN Project_Name: e_min
MIN Share-Name: Data

Tick on the Connect using different credentials option:

The following procedure describes the mounting process for a normal PC in the WWU network:

We recommend to use a network share of the WWU-Cloud, as the HIVE has a high speed connection to it. Please find more information about the WWU-Cloud and network shares here.
To connect to the network share, please open the windows explorer on the HIVE, go to This PC and use Map Network Drive from the menu at the top. Type in the following path:

\\wwu.de\ddfs\Cloud\wwu1\e_min\Data

Tick on the Connect using different credentials option:

Press Finish. In the next window use your University ID and your central University password to connect to your network share.
Note: You have to add the domain wwu\ before your University ID.
User name: wwu\<University-ID>
Password: <University-Password>

2. Use the HIVE Project folder

Every account on the HIVE has a Project folder on the RAID5 System.
D:\PROJECTS\<workgroup name>

You can mount this folder as a network drive using:
\\10.15.127.4\<workgroup name>

Please use Connect using different credentials when connecting.
The user name and password are the same like the ones for connecting remotely to the HIVE.
User name: <Account_Name>
Password: <Account-Password>

For a detailed introduction on how to mount network drives, please see the expand box above and the box: How do I get access to the HIVE?

The data storage on the HIVE under D:\ is intended for data that you are currently working with and that requires quick access. These folders are not intended for long-term storage or backup.

I don't have a network drive to connect to, what other options do I have?

We recommend two main options, if you have no access to your network drive:

  1. You could use Sciebo
  2. You can temporally save your data on the network share of the Imaging Network.

IMPORTANT

This option is only intended for short-term storage of data, e.g. to transfer data onto the HIVE. The Imaging Network will delete this data from time to time without request. Furthermore, everyone with an WWU account theoretically has access to this data. Therefore, we recommend removing the data immediately after use.

To connect to the network share of the Imaging Network, please use Map network drive and connect to the following path:

From Windows:

  • \\wwu.de\ddfs\Cloud\wwu1\e_min\data

From Linux/MAC:

From the HIVE:

Login-Data:
Use name: wwu\<University-ID>
Password: <University-Password>

Please find a detailed introduction on how to connect to a network drive under How do I get access to my data?
For informations about a WWU-Cloud network share click here.

I would like to save data directly on the HIVE, where can I do it?

If you have to save (temporally) data on the HIVE, please do this under the RAID 5 system in the folder of your work group.
D:\PROJECTS\<work_group>
Note: Only your account has access to this folder.

You can also mount this folder as a network drive. For more information see the second point of the expand box How do I get access to my data?

There is a high CPU and Memory usage, but I am not doing annything. Is this normal?
Yes, this is normal and expected. The HIVE is designed to be used simultaneously by many users.
Where can I get support if I have further questions?
Please use the Mattermost channel of the Imaging Network if you have any questions regarding the HIVE.
You can also write us a private message via Mattermost or per E-Mail.
Contact informations are available on the homepage of the Imaging Network.
Can I use multiple screens when using the Hive?

Yes you can! Just enlarge the otion when you connecting the Hive:

Under Display activate the "Use all my monitors..." function.
